"In a democratic society, the Police exercise power with those from whom they derive their authority. Police authority is delegated by the community they serve. Consent of the governed is what gives policing its moral quality. The ultimate responsibility for ordered liberty with justice remains with community."

The goal of the Community Outreach Unit is to work in partnership with the community.

When on duty, the Community Outreach Officer shall be responsible for patrolling and handling all calls for Police service in a specific geographic area. In addition, the Officer will be responsible for developing a partnership with community members and groups within the area, and for promoting and instituting community problem-solving strategies so as to empower them and to address crime, fear of crime, and quality of life issues.

School Resource

This Police Officer, under the scope of School Resource duties, has the primary responsibility for cooperating with the schools in developing and improving safety education programs, supervising the training of members of the Department as it related to school safety issues, and overseeing the maintenance of traffic control devices on or near school zones.

Officer Stephen Sinko is Mendon Police Department’s first School Resource Officer in over ten years to be assigned to work in the schools full-time, Monday through Friday.

The Mendon Police Department looks forward to working in partnership with the School Department to foster a safe and comfortable learning environment for our young people. We encourage students, parents, and teachers to speak with Officer Sinko to address their concerns and ideas with him.

The promotion and deliverance of the Departmental crime prevention and demand reduction activities is also the responsibility of the Community Outreach officer. This Officer serves as the Department's resource to the community to provide information, guidance and education regarding proactive measures that community members can take to reduce their vulnerability to crime. The primary responsibility of the Officer is to educate the community as to target hardening and other proactive measures that can be taken to reduce crime and the fear of crime, and in general, improve the quality of life in this community.

The Mendon Police Department is committed to community policing through specific programs such as Neighborhood and School Resource, as well as Crime Prevention. In addition, every Officer of the Mendon Police Department embraces the community policing concept through less formal interaction with local civic organizations and members of the public. Our Officers are dedicated and committed to the service and protection of our citizenry.
