The Mendon Police K-9 Unit is a new addition to the Police Department after becoming Patrol Certified on December 24, 2015. Officer Pichel and his new K-9 partner Brady attended the Boston Police Department K-9 Academy where they received their certification after 600 hours of training.

Town officials unanimously approved the creation of the K-9 Unit following a presentation to them by Officer Pichel.

The K-9 program is currently funded by Grants received from the Stanton Foundation, MA Vest-A-Dog, and continued generous donations from local businesses and members of the community.

K-9 Brady is a German Shepherd that was born in September 2014. Brady was purchased from Northeast K-9 Unlimited in Raynham, MA. The name Brady was given to him after the students at Clough Elementary School participated in a competition to name the new Police K-9.

Officer Pichel and Brady began working together in September 2015 when they started their training at the BPD K-9 Academy.

The academy provides an intense training course that builds a foundation for the Officer and his K9 to safely and effectively patrol the town.

There are many incredible skills the K-9 team learns prior to becoming patrol certified, such as Tracking, Obedience, Agility, Building Searches, Area Searches, Article Searches, and Criminal Apprehension.

The K-9 Unit adds a unique set of skills that will enhance the departments ability to effectively patrol the Town of Mendon. Having the K-9 Unit in the community helps provide a rapid response to high risk, time sensitive situations, improving the odds of locating missing persons, recovering evidence, and apprehending suspects.

The K-9 Unit will be attending the BPD K-9 Academy again in August 2016 where they will take part in Narcotic School. After receiving certification in Narcotics, K-9 Brady will become a  Dual Purpose Police K-9 specializing in Patrol and Narcotics. The Police Department hopes that having a certified dual purpose K-9 will reduce and prevent drug use and activity in Mendon and surrounding communities.

The Mendon Police Department would like to thank everyone that has shown their support of the new program. You can Email Officer Pichel regarding any K-9 questions.
